What are spanking paddles?

A paddle is a flat, rigid impact toy with a handle. Compared with a whip or flogger it is easy to aim, lands with a broad thud rather than a sting, and gives a satisfying sound. Types of paddles

Leather paddles

The traditional choice. Ouch!, Rouge, Sex and Mischief and Nocturnal paddles range from slim, light designs to broader, heavier ones, including three-flap, strap and spiral cuts from Rouge. Leather warms the skin and gives a deep thud with a clear sound.

Silicone paddles

Edge paddles are moulded silicone with a firm face and a raised word or spike pattern. Silicone wipes clean easily and tends to sting more sharply than leather of the same size.

Impression and textured paddles

Chain Impressions, studded and spiked paddles from Sex and Mischief, Edge and others are made to leave a short-lived pattern on the skin. They are intense and belong in experienced hands.

Loop paddles

The Velvet Noir and Saffron loop paddles replace the flat face with a flexible loop. They are lighter, bend on impact and feel more like a slapper than a board.

How to choose a paddle

Weight and surface decide how a paddle feels far more than its length.

• Experience: beginners want a flat, smooth face in leather or a soft loop; textured and spiked faces are for later.
• Thud or sting: wide, heavy paddles thud; narrow, light or silicone paddles sting. Most people start by preferring thud.
• Material: leather feels classic and softens with use; silicone is easy to clean and can be shared between partners when washed.
• Size: a smaller face is easier to aim precisely; a larger face spreads the impact.
• Look: hearts, lips, skulls, lettering and city collections let you match a paddle to the rest of your kit.

How to use and care for paddles

Warm up by hand before the paddle comes out, and keep the first strokes light. Build intensity slowly, checking in with your partner as you go.

• Aim for the fleshy lower buttocks and upper thighs. Avoid the tailbone, lower back, kidneys and any joint.
• Agree a check-in word and stop as soon as it is said. Stop too if the skin breaks or welts appear that you did not intend.
• Wipe leather with a damp cloth and let it dry; condition it now and then.
• Wash silicone paddles with warm water and a toy cleaner, especially after textured faces have been used.
• Wipe wooden paddles dry after use and check the face for splinters or cracks before each session.
