What are massage candles?

A massage candle looks like an ordinary scented candle, but the wax is formulated to melt into a warm oil that can be poured directly onto skin and massaged in. You light it, let a pool form, blow it out and drizzle the warm oil over shoulders, back or legs. The scent fills the room while the oil does the work of a regular massage oil. Many of the candles here come in tins with a pour spout, which makes the drizzle neater and keeps the oil off your sheets. They are a gentle, low-effort way to make an evening feel deliberate, and they sit alongside the rest of our massage and body range.

Types of massage candles

Pheromone massage candles

Sex Magnet and Jelique candles are scented with pheromone fragrance blends in notes like vanilla and amber, leather, blue lotus, black cherry and strawberry with champagne. The idea is a warm, skin-close scent rather than a strong room perfume.

Novelty message tins

Kama Sutra's Naughty Notes and Naughty Massage Candle lines print a flirtatious one-liner on the lid. They are small, inexpensive and made for gifting, with seasonal editions for Valentine's Day, Halloween and the winter holidays.

Luxury aphrodisiac candles

Sensuva's Lit and Hero candles are larger, layered scents such as vanilla, sugar and sweet pea or ocean and forest. They suit people who want a slower, more indulgent massage rather than a quick novelty.

Hemp seed three-in-one candles

Earthly Body's Hemp Seed candles are marketed as a candle, a massage oil and a moisturiser in one tin, with playful seasonal names. They are a practical middle ground between gift and everyday use.

How to choose massage candles

The right candle depends on who it is for and how often you expect to use it.

• Scent: Choose a note you both already like. Vanilla and amber are the safest crowd-pleasers; leather and forest blends are more distinctive.
• Size: Mini tins give a couple of massages and make good stocking fillers. A full-size candle is better value if massage is a regular part of your routine.
• Pour spout: A tin with a spout is easier to control, especially the first few times.
• Message or plain: Cheeky slogans are fun between partners but a plain label is more discreet on a bedside table.
• Skin sensitivity: If either of you reacts to fragrance, test a small drop on the inner wrist before a full massage.

How to use and care for massage candles

Light the candle and let it burn until a pool of melted oil forms across the surface. Blow it out, wait a moment, then pour a little onto the back of your hand to check the temperature before it touches your partner. Massage candles are not the same as wax and drip candles, which are made for sensation play; do not swap one for the other.

• Keep the wick trimmed and never leave a lit candle unattended.
• Pour away from hair, eyes and the face.
• Oil-based products can weaken latex condoms, so keep candle oil away from condoms and use a separate lubricant for intimate play.
• Wipe the rim and close the lid after use so dust does not settle on the surface.
• Launder oily sheets promptly in hot water.

Massage candles for couples, gifts and date nights

Massage candles are one of the easiest ways to add intimacy without a learning curve, which is why they feature so often in our couples picks. For a date night, pair a candle with a long, unhurried back massage and let the evening go wherever it goes. For a gift, a Valentine's or holiday mini tin with a flirty message says plenty on its own, and a set of lingerie turns it into a full package. Start with a scent you know, pour slowly, and keep the focus on touch rather than technique.
