What are hollow dildos?

A hollow dildo is a dildo with an open core. Instead of a solid shaft, it has a cavity sized to take the wearer's penis, so it is worn, usually with a harness, rather than held. That makes it different from the rest of the dildo range in both purpose and fit. People buy hollow dildos to add length or girth, to keep going after orgasm, to play with a partner when an erection is unreliable, or simply because the look appeals. Many double as a harness-mounted dildo for a partner without a penis, since the cavity does no harm when it is empty.

Types of hollow dildos

Hollow strap-on dildos with harness

The core of this collection. Fetish Fantasy Series makes several sets with stretchy or adjustable harnesses, some with balls, some without. Dr. Skin, Size Matters and Fetish Fantasy Extreme offer their own versions. Everything you need is in the box.

Vibrating and rechargeable hollow strap-ons

Fetish Fantasy Series, Lux Fetish, Nasstoys and Body Extensions add a motor, with a wired remote, a wireless remote or rechargeable power. The vibration reaches both the wearer and the receiving partner.

Hollow dildos sold without a harness

Sportsheets' Banx hollow dildos, plain or ribbed, and the Nexus Collection Lennox hollow vibrating sheath are the dildo alone, for people who already own a harness or prefer to choose one separately.

Suspender and double-dildo systems

King Cock's suspender systems hold a hollow dildo with straps that go over the shoulders rather than around the hips, and one version carries two dildos. Lux Fetish and Body Extensions offer double-penetration and two-dildo sets too.

Squirting hollow dildos

Fetish Fantasy Series includes a hollow squirting set that adds an ejaculating effect; see our ejaculating dildos for more of the same.

How to choose a hollow dildo

Fit for the wearer comes first; size for the receiving partner comes second.

• Internal fit: the cavity must take the wearer's erect or semi-erect penis without pinching; too loose and the dildo will shift, too tight and it will be uncomfortable. Read the inner dimensions, not just the overall length.
• External size: remember that a hollow dildo is always thicker than what it covers; a modest increase in girth is often enough.
• Harness type: stretchy harnesses are quick and forgiving; adjustable buckle harnesses hold a heavier dildo more securely; suspender systems suit larger bodies.
• Power: wired remotes are cheaper; wireless and rechargeable models are tidier in use but need charging.
• Material: silicone sets from Body Extensions and Size Matters are firmer and easier to clean than softer jelly-style dildos.

How to use and care for a hollow dildo

A little lubricant inside the cavity makes the dildo far more comfortable to wear.

• Use a water-based lubricant inside and out; silicone lube can damage silicone dildos.
• Fit the harness snugly before inserting the penis, and adjust until the base sits flat against the body.
• Use a condom over the dildo if you want easier cleaning or are sharing it between partners.
• Wash the dildo inside and out with warm water and a toy cleaner after each use; remove any bullet or battery pack first and wipe it separately.
• Dry completely, hand-wash the harness and store the dildo away from other materials. Stop if anything hurts or the fit becomes painful.

Hollow dildos for couples, beginners and strap-on play

Most buyers are couples, and a basic Fetish Fantasy Series set with a stretchy harness is the usual first purchase: inexpensive, forgiving in fit and simple to clean. Add vibration once you know the shape suits you both. If the dildo will also be used by a partner without a penis, a set with a sturdier harness crosses over neatly into our strap-on dildos, and anyone wanting more of a visual effect can compare the realistic dildos for the same shapes in solid form.
