What are restraints?

Restraints are soft or adjustable bindings, such as cuffs, straps and ties, used in consensual adult play to gently limit movement. They are a popular way to explore trust, anticipation and a change of pace with a partner. Because they involve trust, this guide covers the types, how to choose and, above all, how to play safely.

Types of restraints

Wrist and ankle cuffs

Padded, adjustable wrist and ankle restraints are the most common style. Look for broad, soft cuffs with secure fastenings that are easy to release.

Handcuffs

Handcuffs and cuffs range from plush, play-friendly designs to metal styles. Choose ones with a quick release and keep the key in an easy-to-reach place.

Ties, ropes and straps

Soft ties and straps are flexible and can be placed in many ways. Choose smooth, wide materials rather than thin cord, which can dig in.

Bed and furniture restraint sets

These sets attach to a bed frame or mattress and are designed to hold cuffs in place. Check that the straps and anchor points are strong and suit your bed.

How to choose restraints

• Prioritize comfort. Padding, wide cuffs and soft linings reduce pressure on wrists and ankles.
• Check the materials. Faux leather, nylon, neoprene and soft fabric are popular. If you have a skin sensitivity, check for latex or metal in the product description.
• Choose adjustable fits. Straps that adjust help you leave room to slide a finger underneath.
• Look for quick release. You should be able to free someone fast, with no tools and no struggle.
• Start simple. Soft cuffs are a gentle first step. Keep your first set simple and gentle, and you can add extras like a blindfold or mask or collars and leashes later on.

How to use and care for restraints

Talk first. Agree on what you both want, what is off limits and what you will do if one of you wants to stop. Many couples enjoy pairing restraints with sensation play or impact play, but add one new element at a time and only with clear agreement.

For cleaning, wipe hard surfaces with a damp cloth and mild soap or a toy cleaner. Follow the label for fabric items, and let everything dry fully. Store restraints flat or loosely coiled in a cool, dry place. Check stitching, buckles and fastenings regularly and retire anything worn or frayed.

Safety

• Consent is essential. Everyone involved must freely agree, and can change their mind at any time.
• Agree on a safe word, and a non-verbal signal if speaking is not possible. Respect it immediately.
• Never leave someone restrained alone, even briefly.
• Check circulation often. Watch for numbness, tingling, coolness or color changes in the hands and feet, and release straight away if they appear.
• Avoid restraining around the neck, and do not restrain anyone who has had alcohol or drugs.
• Avoid numbing products while someone is restrained, since they can hide warning signs of discomfort.
• Keep safety scissors or a key nearby, and speak with a healthcare professional if you have joint, circulation or injury concerns.

Aftercare is worth planning too. Once play ends, check in with each other, offer water and a blanket, and talk about what felt good and what you would change next time. This keeps the experience positive and builds trust for the future.
