What are classic vibrators?

A classic vibrator is the original design: a straight or slightly tapered shaft, smooth or lightly textured, with a motor inside and a simple control at the base. It is not shaped for one particular spot, which is its strength; you can use it externally on the clitoris, internally, or trace it anywhere else, and most people find it intuitive from the first use. The style has been refreshed over the years with silicone bodies, rechargeable batteries and curved tips, but the straightforward form is the same. Classics are the backbone of our wider vibrators range.

Types of classic vibrators

Standard classic vibrators

Full-size straight vibrators such as the Classic Chic Standard and Wave, the Timeless Classics Big Boss and Top Stud, and the Hard Vibes Maxi Mystique. These give the most length and presence and suit internal use.

Mini and slim classics

Shorter or narrower shafts, like the Classic Chic Mini, the Hard Vibes Classic Slender and the Powerbullet Eezy Pleezy. They are lighter, easier to carry and easier to aim externally, which makes them popular first toys.

G-spot classics

The same straight body with a curved or angled tip, such as the Classic Chic Standard G, Mini G, Wild G and Curve. The bend aims the vibration at the front vaginal wall; see more in G-spot vibrators.

Silicone and rechargeable classics

Updated editions of the classic shape. Silicone versions include the Timeless Classics line and the Classic Chic silicone models; rechargeable editions include the rechargeable Classic Chic range, the Chroma classic and the Bodywand My First classic. They cost more but save on batteries and feel softer.

Classic-style rabbits

The Rabbit Company's Classic Rabbit and Vive's Zosia keep a classic curved shaft but add an external arm for clitoral stimulation at the same time. They sit at the premium end here and bridge to our rabbit vibrators.

How to choose classic vibrators

Size, power source and tip shape are the main decisions; the rest is color and budget.

• Size: a mini is discreet and easy to control externally; a standard length is better if you want internal use as well.
• Tip shape: a straight tip is versatile; a curved G-spot tip targets a specific area and can feel more intense internally.
• Material: silicone is soft, non-porous and easy to clean; hard plastic transmits vibration more sharply and tends to cost less.
• Power: rechargeable models are more convenient and often stronger; battery versions cost less up front and need nothing but spares.
• Controls: a simple twist or single button is easiest for first-timers; multiple patterns are nice but not essential.

How to use and care for classic vibrators

Start on the lowest setting and explore externally before using the toy internally. A little lubricant makes everything smoother.

• Use water-based lubricant, especially with silicone toys, which silicone lube can damage.
• Clean before and after use with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner; keep battery compartments and charging ports dry unless the toy is labeled waterproof.
• Dry completely and store in a pouch, away from other toys and direct sunlight.
• Remove batteries before storing non-rechargeable models; charge rechargeable ones every few months even when unused.
• A classic vibrator has no flared base, so do not use it anally; stop if anything hurts.

Classic vibrators for beginners and couples

Classics are the default recommendation for a first vibrator: unintimidating, versatile and easy to understand. A mid-sized rechargeable silicone classic covers almost every use, and the Classic Chic line offers that in several sizes and tips at an entry-level price. Couples use classics during sex for added clitoral stimulation or hand them over during foreplay, and the slimmer models are gentle enough for a nervous partner. If you later want something more targeted, a G-spot classic or a rabbit is the natural next step.
