Gags

What are gags?

A gag is a bondage accessory worn in or over the mouth to limit speech. It is used in consensual play to add a sense of helplessness and vulnerability, and often as part of a wider restraint scene. The classic design is a ball on an adjustable strap, but this collection also includes ring gags, open-mouth gags, bar and bit gags, feeding gags and a few novelty designs such as candy, bone and glow-in-the-dark gags. Most here are made from silicone, which is soft, non-porous and simple to clean.

Types of gags

Ball gags

The most common style, with a silicone, rubber or steel ball held in place by a leather or faux leather strap that buckles behind the head. Fetish and Fashion, Ouch! and Sinful offer plain versions, and breathable designs have holes through the ball to make breathing easier. See the full range in ball gags.

Ring and open-mouth gags

A ring gag holds the mouth open with a hoop rather than filling it, and some have interchangeable rings. Open-mouth and lip-shaped gags from Sex and Mischief, Scandal and Fetish Fantasy Series work in a similar way. Both leave the airway clear, which many people prefer. Browse ring gags and open-mouth gags.

Bar and bit gags

A straight silicone bar or a horse-style bit sits between the teeth and is held by a strap. Both are less intrusive than a ball and easier to speak around, so they suit lighter play. Boundless, Saffron and Sex and Mischief make them; see bit gags for more.

Specialty and kit gags

Feeding gags, spider gags, stopper gags and gags with a removable ball or rod are for experienced players. Kits pair a gag with nipple clamps, an eye mask or a masquerade mask for a complete starter set.

How to choose a gag

Comfort and breathing come first. The look of a gag matters far less than how it feels after a few minutes.

• Style: beginners usually find a small or breathable ball gag, a bar gag or a ring gag easiest to tolerate.
• Size: a smaller ball is more comfortable and reduces jaw strain. You can move up later if you want.
• Material: silicone is soft on the teeth and easy to wash; rubber and steel balls are firmer, and lace-trimmed designs look pretty but need more care to dry.
• Strap and buckle: an adjustable strap with a quick-release buckle or snap means a good fit and fast removal.
• Breathability: look for breathing holes or an open design if the wearer has a cold, allergies or any breathing concern.

How to use and care for gags

A gagged person cannot say stop, so you must agree another way for them to do so before the gag goes in.

• Agree a clear non-verbal signal, such as dropping an object or a specific hand gesture, and honour it instantly.
• Never leave anyone gagged unattended, and keep sessions short, as jaw fatigue and drooling set in quickly.
• Do not combine a gag with anything that covers the nose, and avoid gags entirely if the wearer is congested or nauseous.
• Wash silicone gags with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner after every use and dry fully; wipe leather and faux leather straps with a damp cloth.
• Check straps and buckles for wear and replace anything that is cracked or fraying.

Gags for beginners and couples

If you are new to bondage, start with a bar gag or a small breathable ball gag, worn briefly, and build from there. A gag combines naturally with soft cuffs or a blindfold, and several kits here pair one with nipple clamps or an eye mask; browse the wider restraints collection to put a scene together. For couples, talk about what the gag means to each of you before trying it, and keep communication open afterwards so both people feel good about the experience.
