What are harnesses?

Harnesses are adjustable straps or briefs that hold a compatible dildo or toy in place at the hips, so hands are free during solo or partnered play. They are often called strap-on harnesses and are worn by people of all genders and body types. Tokyo Valentino offers top brands, in-stock items shown first, free shipping over $59 and discreet packaging.

Types of harnesses

Strap-on briefs

Underwear-style harnesses with a front opening for a toy, giving a snug, stable fit without a lot of buckles.

Adjustable strap harnesses

A waist strap with two leg straps, usually adjustable, so they can suit a wide range of sizes.

Thigh harnesses

Worn on the thigh instead of the hips, which some people prefer for comfort or a different position.

Vibrator-compatible harnesses

Some harnesses include a pocket for a small bullet vibrator so the wearer can enjoy added sensation too.

Leather and faux leather styles

Often chosen for a firm, classic look. See leather and faux leather for more.

How to choose a harness

Fit matters most, so check the size chart and the waist and hip range. Then consider:

  • Material: nylon, cotton blends, leather and silicone-coated fabrics all exist. Choose something that is comfortable against skin and easy to wash.
  • Ring size: the O-ring opening should match the base of your toy. Check the measurements in the product details.
  • Compatible toys: look for a toy with a flared base designed for harness use, such as dildos, realistic dildos or vibrating dildos.
  • Adjustability: straps that tighten and release easily help you find a secure fit.
  • Beginner tips: try the harness on with the toy attached before the moment, adjust it for comfort and begin with a smaller, firmer toy.

How to use and care for your harness

Put the harness on first, adjust the straps so it feels snug but not tight, then insert the toy into the ring and check that it sits securely. Go slowly, communicate often and use lubricant on the toy.

  • Lubricant: lubricants help comfort. Water-based options suit all toy materials; avoid silicone lube on silicone toys.
  • Condoms: a fresh condom over the toy helps with hygiene and makes cleaning easier, especially when switching between partners or between body areas.
  • Cleaning: wash the toy with warm water and mild soap. Follow the care label for the harness; many fabric ones can be hand-washed and air-dried, while leather needs gentle wiping.
  • Storage: keep the harness dry and the toy in a separate pouch.

Safety

Never use a toy for anal play unless it has a flared base, and never share a toy between body areas without cleaning or changing the condom. Stop if something hurts, and speak with a healthcare professional about pain or injury.

Harnesses for couples and solo play

Harnesses are popular in many kinds of couples play, and they can also be used solo by anyone who prefers hands-free use. If you want more ideas for partnered play, browse products for couples.

Comfort and communication

Comfort is as important as fit. Soft edges, a wide waistband and adjustable straps help the harness stay in place without pinching. If you are using one with a partner, talk beforehand about pace, positions and anything you would like to avoid, and check in as you go. Practising with the harness on your own first can also build confidence and help you learn how the toy moves.

FAQs

Harnesses: frequently asked questions

What is a strap-on harness?

A strap-on harness is an adjustable set of straps or briefs that holds a compatible dildo or toy at the hips. It frees up the hands and can be used by anyone, regardless of gender, for solo or partnered play.

How do I choose the right size harness?

Measure your waist and hips, then compare them with the size chart. Look for adjustable straps and check that the ring size matches your toy's base. If you are between sizes, an adjustable style is usually easier to fit.

What kind of dildo works with a harness?

Choose a dildo with a flared base and a base width that fits the harness ring. Many are labelled harness-compatible. Silicone is a popular, body-safe choice, but check the product details for ring sizing.

How do I clean a harness?

Check the care label. Many nylon and cotton harnesses can be hand-washed with mild soap and air-dried. Leather and faux leather are usually wiped gently and conditioned. Wash the attached toy separately with warm water and mild soap.

Can I use a harness for solo play?

Yes. Some people use a harness with a suction-based or compatible toy for hands-free solo play. Take it slowly, use lubricant and make sure the toy sits securely before you begin.
