What are anal beads?

Anal beads are a series of spheres, usually increasing in size, joined on a flexible shaft or cord with a ring or flared base at the end. They are inserted gradually, bead by bead, and the sensation of each one passing the anal sphincter is the main appeal, especially when the whole string is withdrawn slowly at the point of orgasm. Modern beads are mostly solid silicone, which is smooth and easy to clean, and many add vibration, remote control or even rotation. They are a gentler introduction to anal play than a plug of equivalent size because you control exactly how many beads go in. For the full range of plugs, probes and vibrators, see anal toys.

Types of anal beads

Classic silicone beads

Simple non-vibrating strings from Booty Call, Luxe, Selopa and Sex and Mischief start small and finish at a modest size. They are the cheapest way in and the easiest to clean. Many are tapered so the first few beads are very slim.

Vibrating anal beads

Rechargeable vibrating beads from Envy Toys, Renegade, BANG! and Rocks Off add a motor to the shaft, often with multiple patterns. Some have a suction base for hands-free play. Our anal vibrators collection covers more powered options.

Remote-control and app-controlled beads

Beads from b-Vibe, Evolved and Lovense come with a wireless remote or connect to an app, so a partner can change the pattern from across the room. The Lovense Ridge adds rotation to vibration.

Weighted and metal beads

Stainless steel beads from b-Vibe and weighted ball beads from Tom of Finland bring heft and the option of warming or cooling the toy in water before use. They work with any lubricant, including silicone.

Combination and dual-stimulation toys

A few items pair beads with a cock ring, a rabbit vibrator or a plug, giving simultaneous stimulation for couples or solo play. These suit people who already enjoy beads and want to combine them with something else.

How to choose anal beads

Size, material and whether you want vibration are the main decisions; everything else is preference.

• Bead size: Beginners should look for a tapered string where the first bead is finger-width or smaller. Larger uniform beads are for experienced users.
• Material and flexibility: Flexible silicone follows the body's curves and is forgiving; rigid steel feels firmer and heavier. Avoid cords with exposed string, which are hard to clean.
• Base or handle: A sturdy ring, T-bar or flared base is essential so the toy can be retrieved easily. Never use beads without one.
• Vibration and control: Decide whether you want a motor, and if so whether a remote or app matters for partner play.
• Cleaning: Smooth, seamless designs clean fastest. Check whether the toy is fully waterproof or only splash-resistant before rinsing.

How to use and care for anal beads

Coat the beads and the anus generously with lubricant, relax, and insert one bead at a time, pausing between each. Pull them out slowly and steadily, never with a yank, and stop at once if anything hurts.

• Use water-based lube with silicone beads; silicone lube is only for glass or metal toys. Thick anal lubricants are ideal.
• Only insert as many beads as feel comfortable; the base must stay outside the body.
• Wash before and after use with warm water and a toy cleaner, cleaning between each bead where residue collects.
• Dry fully and store in a bag or pouch away from other silicone toys.
• Do not move the toy from anal to vaginal use without a thorough clean or a fresh condom.

Anal beads for beginners and couples

First-timers should pick a slim tapered silicone string without vibration, use plenty of lube and stop after a few beads if that is all that feels good. Couples can add a remote-control or app-enabled set so one partner controls the sensation, or combine beads with other toys for dual stimulation. If you want to work up to larger sizes in a structured way, an anal toy kit with graduated plugs complements a set of beads nicely.
